Biochem/physiol Actions: Alkaline protamine binds to negatively charged heparin. Use of protamine during cardiovascular surgery sometime triggers anaphylactic reactions.
Biochem/physiol Actions: Protamine facilitates direct transfection of microbial cells, and of human cells using cationic liposomes. Protamine effectively neutralizes the anticoagulation effects of heparin.
General description: Protamine sulfate is a cationic polypeptide having a molecular weight of 5 kDa, isolated from salmon sperm.
