| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Human growth hormone (HGH) is required for normal human growth and development. HGH modifies a variety of physiological functions by stimulating the expression of insulin-like growth factor I and increases calcium retention and bone density. HGH increases muscle mass, promotes lipolysis, and reduces liver uptake of glucose. Abnormalities in the regulation of HGH lead to various growth disorders such as gigantism or acromegaly due to hypersecretion of HGH. Conversely, HGH deficiency leads to growth deficit in children and GH deficiency syndrome in adults. |
