| Biochem/physiol Actions: | The location of the centromere on the chromosome is dependent on the histone H3 variant centromere protein A (CENP-A). The N-terminal tail of CENP-A is highly different from other H3 variants. Serine 7 of (CENP-A) plays an important role in mitosis-specific phosphorylation. It also plays a key role in kinetochore assembly. Alteration in CENP-A causes various human cancers. CENP-A may play an important role in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) and may serve as prognostic marker. It acts as a potential target for gene therapy in the treatment of EOC. The NH2 terminus of human CENP-A is essential for mitotic progression and necessary for the platform function of CENP-A centromeric chromatin in the assembly as well as maintenance of active kinetochores. |

| General description: | CENP-A is a 17 kDa histone H3- like protein. |
| General description: | Centromere protein A is a protein encoded by the CENPA gene in humans. It is referred as CenH3 and CENP-A. It is a histone H3 variant that has centromere-specific nucleosomal property and is located at neocentromere found on a chromosome 10. CENP-A- binding clusters is associated with nucleosomal blocks within the neocentromeric chromatin. |
