Alginate lyase specificity: Alginic acid is composed of of blocks of β-D-(1-4) mannuronic acid homopolymeric regions (MMMM…), α-L-(1-4)-guluronic acid (GGGG…) homopolymeric regions, and alternating copolymer regions of β-D-(1-4) mannuronic acid - α-L-(1-4)-guluronic acid (GMGMGM…). Bacterial alginic acid can be acetlylated at the 2 or 3 positions on mannuronic acid.

| Preparation Note: | Add 0.15 mI of enzyme solution (1 un/ml) to 4.5 ml of 0.1% sodium alginate (pH 6.3). Incubate at 37 °C for 30 minutes. Terminate reaction by addition of 4.65 ml of 0.1 N NaOH. |
