Biochem/physiol Actions: Methyl phenylacetate undergoes decomposition on photolysis in methanol. Methyl phenylacetate acts as acylating agent and causes the enantioselective acylation of beta-lactam intermediate using penicillin G amidase. Methyl phenylacetate is the starting material in manufacture of synthetic perfumes.
