| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 family, member A2 (ALDH1a2), also known as retinaldehyde dehydrogenase type II (RALDH2), catalyzes the synthesis of all trans-retinoic acid from vitamin A. ALDH1a2 acts as a tumor suppressor. It plays a vital role in early embryonic and cardiac development. Variation in the ALDH1a2 gene expression may increase the risk of developing congenital heart disease (CHD). Reduced levels of ALDH1a2 has been observed in human prostate cancer patients. |
